The High Court has dismissed a lawsuit brought by seven claimants against Associated Newspapers Ltd for alleged illegal information gathering, ruling that the plaintiffs failed to prove their case regarding five articles published by Daily Mail. [1] Among the unsuccessful claimants are Prince Harry and Doreen Lawrence. [1] Although the litigation involved an estimated value of up to £50 million, the court approved a budget of £4.1 million for the plaintiffs and £4.4 million for the defendants. [1] Judge Nicklin specifically determined that the claimants could not demonstrate that Daily Mail's reporting violated laws on data protection or privacy. [1]
Despite losing the case, Doreen Lawrence will not be required to pay any legal costs because her expenses are covered by insurance and she has been protected from financial loss by Prince Harry's efforts. [1] The seven plaintiffs now face a decision on whether to appeal the judgment. [1]
