Released on July 9, 1981, the arcade game Donkey Kong became the highest-grossing arcade title in Japan for both 1981 and 1982 [1]. The character established by this release later defined a series of Game & Watch handhelds that sold eight million units, while Coleco's licensed home console version moved six million cartridges [1]. At the June 1983 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Coleco displayed an enhanced version of Donkey Kong running on its Adam computer, prompting Atari CEO Ray Kassar to accuse them of breach of contract and express dissatisfaction with their actions [1]. The Coleco Adam subsequently failed in the market, selling only 100,000 units before being discontinued just 16 months after launch . Following these copyright disputes, Ray Kassar was fired from Atari on July 7, 1983, an event that caused the company to miss out on distribution rights for Nintendo's NES . Consequently, Nintendo independently released its own version of the console, which went on to sell 60 million units and allowed the Japanese manufacturer to replace Atari as the leader in the home video game market .
